Hostel policies
Our policies help ensure a great stay for everyone. By booking a room, you agree to follow the rules below.
Cancellation Policy: We have a 24-hour cancellation policy; cancel by the day before your check-in to avoid a full charge for the first night (before midnight). Cancellations due to changed travel plans, weather conditions, or canceled flights do NOT waive any cancellation fees.
Front Desk Hours and Check-In/Out: Our front desk is open from 7am to 11pm. Late arrivals can be arranged with prior notice. Check-in starts at 3pm. Luggage storage is available for early arrivals. Check-out is at noon. Hostel guests have 24-hour access to the premises.
ID Requirements: Our hostel is for travelers and cannot accommodate Portland/Vancouver Metro residents. A valid government-issued photo ID showing residence outside this area and a credit or debit card in the guest’s name are required. International travelers must present a passport; U.S. travelers need a state ID.
Booking and Payment: No charges are made to your credit card at the time of reservation. The total amount is due at check-in. Oregon does not have a sales tax, but a 16% lodging tax will be added to the overnight rate at check-in. This includes a 14% state and City of Portland lodging tax plus a 2% Portland Tourism Assessment.
Personal Property: We are not responsible for theft or loss. Lockers are provided in the dorms, and locks are free to borrow. However, if a lock is not returned or is lost, a $10 charge will apply. Please be mindful not to leave any belongings visible in your car. Although our neighborhood is considered safe, car break-ins can happen, as with many cities, when items are left in sight. If you can't fit your belongings in your trunk, we have luggage storage available.
Pets & Service Animals: Only service animals are permitted.
Minors: Guests under 18 must be accompanied by a parent, guardian, or adult leader.
Smoking & Alcohol: Smoking is allowed only in limited designated areas. Alcohol is not allowed in sleeping rooms and most common spaces.
Service Refusal: We reserve the right to refuse service for valid, non-discriminatory reasons.
Behavior Expectations: Guests are expected to respect others and to clean up after themselves. Illegal activity will be reported to the police.
Group Bookings: Group bookings of 8 or more follow separate guidelines. Please email groups@nwportlandhostel.com for more information. You can also refer to our Group Accommodations page for additional details.
