One of the best ways to get to know a new place is by joining a walking tour—especially early in your trip. It helps you get oriented to the neighborhood, understand the layout of the city, and start to feel grounded in your surroundings.
Walking tours led by locals offer more than just sightseeing. You’ll discover hidden spots, hear stories and history from people who actually live here, and get tips you probably won’t find in a guidebook. It’s a low-key, enjoyable way to experience a city from a different perspective.
They’re also a great way to meet other travelers. Whether you're exploring solo or with friends, it’s always nice to connect with people on the road—and sometimes a walking tour leads to a good conversation, or even plans for later in the day.
At Northwest Portland Hostel, we typically host three walking tours per week—on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (seasonally). Just sign up at the front desk the day before.
Our tours are tip-based, which helps support our local guides and keeps their small businesses going. A portion of proceeds is also donated to local nonprofits like Carpe Mundi, which provides mentorship and study abroad opportunities for low-income Portland college students.
If you’re staying with us, joining a walking tour is a simple, meaningful way to explore Portland and connect with others while you're at it.
