Portland is a great city with a multitude of mini-cultures and a colorful history. We organize activities to help our guests meet other travelers and explore parts of Portland that they may otherwise not see on their own.
Join us every Tuesday for local and touring musicians, local brews on tap and scratch menu specials. Summer months two open mics and sets from our featured artist in the Hostel Cafe from from 6:30pm-9:30pm in the Hostel Courtyard. For the month of January, in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day we will be hosting our 3rd annual Month Long Service Challenge.
The calendar below has volunteer opportunities as well as events happening here. Most of the events last only an hour or so – so little time for such great impact. Get to know Portland in a deeper way and record your hours on our Hall of Helping Hands to help inspire others!

What is the difference between a tourist and a traveler? Travelers try to be authentic members of communities they travel though! Come be a member of our community during your stay! We think you will be surprised at what you see when you engage deeply with the city around you.
Experience Portland’s natural beauty as well as the efficient public transportation system. Take the Train, Trail, Tram and Trolley from Washington Park up to the incredible views from Council Crest, the highest point in Portland, down to the South Waterfront and back into downtown. Transportation cost: $5. Wear appropriate shoes for steep trail and bring water.
Pittock Mansion Hike
Hike with us through the beautiful greenery of Forest Park up to Pittock Mansion, a french Renaissance-style château that overlooks the city’s skyline. Wear appropriate shoes for steep trail and bring water.
Join us on a guided walking tour through the Pearl District. All art galleries are open late and free on the first Thursday of each month. Celebrate an evening with art galleries, street performers, and more. We’ll take you to the hot spots!
Last Thursday on Alberta
Alberta street is famous for funky galleries, trendy vintage stores, and unique bars. Join in for their monthly Last Thursday event and experience the art, the music and the food! Bring Photo ID (Passport for international guests) and money to purchase goods, food and drinks.
Put your trivia skills to the test while enjoying some of Portland’s finest beer! Even if you don’t win a prize you come away with plenty of random facts and new friends. Must be 21+! Bring Photo ID (Passport for international guests). Trivia is free, but bring money for food and drinks.
Brew Pub Tour
Go out for a night on the town and experience one of Portland’s greatest novelties: our many local Brewpubs! Join other travelers and hop around the Northwest neighborhood sampling delicious microbrews at a number of our favorite watering holes. Must be 21+! Bring Photo ID (Passport for international guests) and money for food and drinks.
Besides all the great breweries, Portland also has many great bars to offer. From lounges on the 30th floor of a skyscraper to hidden speakeasy bars. Live Music, Cabaret, Burlesque & Rock-n-Roll – we’ll show you the hot spots of the city. Must be 21+! Bring Photo ID (Passport for international guests) and money for food and drinks.
Happy Hour Hopper
Portland is all about beer, coffee and delicious food. We’ve become accustomed to happy hours! Even the city’s most esteemed restaurants are offering specials substantial enough to send cheap eats lovers into paroxysms of joy. Join us in the afternoon for cheap and delicious bites and cold and tasty drinks. Must be 21+! Bring Photo ID (Passport for international guests) and money for food and drinks.
Dance and Club Night
Chilling at bars and breweries is all well and good and all, but sometimes when the music burrows deep into your veins, there’s only one way to unleash that energy…and that is to get down on the dance floor, shake your booty and boogie. We’ll take you out to Portland’s best, weirdest and craziest parties. Must be 21+! Bring Photo ID (Passport for international guests) and money for food and drinks.
There’s nothing better than a homemade meal on the road. Meet other guests and enjoy a delicious dinner in the main kitchen of the hostel. Menu varies, but includes spaghetti night, make-your-own burritos, curry and rice, authentic Greek cuisine, crepes and more.
Walking Tour of Nob Hill
Take a tour of Portland’s most historic neighborhood, called “Nob Hill”, “Alphabet District” and “Northwest”, while learning interesting facts about the architecture, history, and culture. It is the a good way to learn how to get around in our lovely neighborhood. Wear appropriate shoes for walking and bring water.
Quirky Portland Tour
Keep Portland weird! Walk through downtown and discover Portland’s quirky side. From Voodoo Doughnuts to the smallest Park in the world. You will see and hear stuff that you will not believe to be true! Wear appropriate shoes for walking and bring water.
Music in the Secret Garden
Every Tuesday in the summer, enjoy live music by a featured singer/songwriter, open mic and BBQ dinner in the Secret Garden just off the main kitchen.
Ice Cream Social
Meet hostel volunteers and other guests over an all-you-can-eat ice cream sundae bar in the main kitchen.
Join us for movie screenings and popcorn in our main kitchen.
Free Play Night at Ground Kontrol
Experience Portland’s classic “barcade” with an impressive variety of arcade games, pinball, and beer. For a $5 cover, you can play as many games as you want until 2 am. Must be 21+! Bring Photo ID (Passport for international guests) and money for food and drinks.
Free Movies in the Park (Summer only)
Watch a movie under the stars in one of Portland’s city parks. Bring a blanket, some snacks, and enjoy the free popcorn! Live music will entertain you before the movie begins. See the activities calendar for the movie schedule.
Other Festivals and Special Events
The hostel takes groups to a variety of special events happening around the city throughout the year. Some events include the Blues Festival, Oregon Brewers Fest, Zoolights, Cinco de Mayo festival, the Rose Festival and many more.
