The summer weather might be winding down here in Portland, but the abundance of things to do around the city hasn’t waned one bit, keeping our volunteers very active leading tours, hikes, pub crawls, and much more.
Both Hostelling International hostels in Portland, Northwest and Hawthorne, have a dedicated team of volunteers who devote time outside of their busy schedules to give travelers a unique and authentic experience while during their stay. This hard work does not go unnoticed, and in order to show our appreciation, we throw our volunteers parties!
Last Sunday, October 9th marked the Fall 2011 Hostelling International Portland Volunteer Appreciation Party, held at the HI-Hawthorne Hostel in southeast Portland. Volunteers from HI-Portland, Northwest and Hawthorne, as well as the Oregon Council gathered for an afternoon of food, drinks, live music by Portland band Glue Horses, and an award ceremony to celebrate the Volunteers of the Year.
Each hostel and the council chose one person to honor as their Volunteer of the Year—someone who exemplified exceptional dedication, enthusiasm, and commitment to their job as a volunteer, as well as leading a large number activities. We chose to recognize Lauren, who has been a volunteer with us since June 2010. After returning to her hometown in Portland from traveling in Australia, she wanted to stay connected to the travel community, so she researched local hostels where she could volunteer. We are so fortunate she found us! Lauren is always so positive and welcoming to the hostellers during her activities, and her energy and enthusiasm makes for a great night, whether she is leading a brew pub crawl or cooking dinner for Kitchen Connection.
This month, Lauren will be moving to Hawaii to start her next adventure, and while we wish her the best in her upcoming travels, she will certainly be missed!
Thanks to ALL of our amazing volunteers, both at our hostel and Hawthorne, for showing off Portland to the many visitors that come through our doors. Your hard work is very much appreciated, and we could not run the activities programs without you!
