The white lights sparkle in the trees, the grill is stacked with bratwurst and veggie burgers, and the fresh baguettes from Ken’s Artisan Bakery are still warm as the first performers step up to the microphone.
“Welcome to Music in the Secret Garden”, they say, and begin to play a song to the crowd that has gathered.
For three summers now, the Northwest Portland Hostel has hosted live music, BBQ and open mic every Tuesday evening in the secluded garden patio just off the main kitchen. Old friends gather to catch up, while newly arrived guests from around the world meet for the first time.
Each week, a singer/songwriter is featured as the headlining act, but there is always time for open mic, available to any and all who care to share their musical talents. This summer, the lineup of headliners is impressive, and includes talented musicians from all along the west coast. Artists like Amanda West of Santa Cruz, Chris Kokesh of Portland, and Don Bellairs, a Kentucky transplant, just to name a few. During the last week in July and the first week of August, this event is teaming up with the Zigzag Mountain Songwriting Camp to present musicians participating in the workshop.
Locals and travelers alike are invited to join this weekly event. Admission is free, but please bring a donation for the BBQ.
