Greetings! My name is Tessah, and I am the new Activities Coordinator at HI- Portland, Northwest. I’m fairly new to Portland, having lived here for less than a year, but have felt at home ever since my first few days in this beautiful city. More like a big, small town, Portland’s charm comes from its friendly, welcoming atmosphere, making it a great place to visit, even if you only have a few days. Although we are famous for our smooth microbrews, delicious food, and stunning natural beauty, Portland has even more to offer in its hidden nooks and crannies. My job as Activities Coordinator is to find our interesting, unique qualities Portland and make them accessible to travelers, allowing everyone to experience Portland’s small-town charm inside a city.
Before moving to Portland I was teaching English in South Korea, an unforgettable experience, teaching me that when you mix together a desire to travel, some spontaneity, and a few Google searches, the possibilities are endless. Living in a foreign country pushes you in ways that no other experience can, forcing you to rethink beliefs you’d always assumed were fact and embrace a completely new, often challenging way of interacting with others. Even the littlest things, like eating out of communal bowls instead of separate plates, can have the biggest impact on reshaping how you view yourself and the rest of the world.
I am excited to be working for an organization that furthers worldwide travel and cultural exchange, and hope to contribute my part to promoting a healthier global community as the Activities Coordinator here in Portland, Oregon. If meeting travelers while showing off this great city sounds appealing to you, I’d love to talk to you about volunteering with us!
